Why your contractor choice matters more in Charlotte

Our summers are typically around 95°F in Charlotte, so if you do not use proper curing compounds to cure concrete, it will dry too quickly (before it has had a chance to gain strength), resulting in a weak product. In addition to the high temperatures of summer, the winter surprise ice storms that hit the area also create problems for concrete that has not been sealed properly.
As if those problems were not enough, there is a greater issue; we have some of the most expansive red clay soils located in the southeastern United States. This expansive clay expands when it rains and contracts after it has dried, causing constant stress on any slab that was not designed to account for this type of movement.
A concrete contractor with experience working in areas such as Arizona and Ohio would not be aware of these conditions. For every project completed in Mecklenburg County, whether it is driveways, patios, foundations, etc., these conditions will be a contributing factor.

Concrete Driveways
Your driveway is one of the first things people notice about your house, and if you own a poorly installed driveway (which is not unusual with the climate conditions in Charlotte), it will look very old in just a few short years. We install new driveways, replace old ones that need to be replaced, or install decorative and stamped driveways if you’d like something more than a broom finish. We also repair existing driveways by filling cracks, polyjacking for settled slabs, and resurfacing if the driveway is structurally sound but is in poor condition.
Concrete Patios
Charlotte, North Carolina generally has great weather for outdoor living almost year-round. A concrete patio, whether it’s a clean broom-finish concrete slab or a decorative stamped patio, creates usable square footage to your home and adds real value to your property. We build all types of patios throughout the metro area, from basic rectangle slabs to custom-designed multi-level patios with integrated landscaping borders, etc.
For homeowners near the Catawba River, and those who live in low-lying areas of Mecklenburg County, we install permeable concrete that allows the heavy downpours we typically receive in summer to drain properly as opposed to causing standing water.
Concrete repair and leveling
If you’re seeing cracks, spalling, or a section of driveway or patio that has settled and created a trip hazard, don’t assume you need a full replacement. In many cases, precision crack filling or polyurethane foam injection (polyjacking) can restore the surface at a fraction of the cost. We’ll tell you honestly at the estimate whether repair makes sense — and if replacement is the better long-term investment, we’ll tell you that too.
Concrete slabs and foundations
Decorative and stamped concrete
Decorative concrete has come a long way since its inception. The stamped concrete that we put in place in 2026 will look as close to a natural stone product (i.e., ashlar, seamless slate, and exposed aggregate) as possible, using multi-tone reactive stains that coordinate with the classic brick architecture of Charlotte.

Charlotte Residential Concrete FAQs: Costs, Patios & Driveways

Permits are necessary for different types of concrete projects and where your property connects with the road network. Driveways that connect to city-maintained streets are subject to review by Charlotte’s Department of Transportation (CDOT), and an application for permits must be made with the Charlotte Development Center.
- If you are building a driveway that connects with a state-maintained (NCDOT) road, you need to receive a separate permit from the District Engineer’s Office for your local NCDOT district (the wait time for this permit will be 4 – 8 weeks).
- A building permit is necessary to build a new foundation, or major structural concrete slab, in Mecklenburg County, even though the permits provide no guarantee that the new structure will comply with residential safety codes.
- When we are handling your project, we include the handling of all permit applications as part of our regular project procedure. If your project requires a permit, we will let you know up front and will factor in the timeframe associated with obtaining your permit into our schedule for your project.
FAQ's
If you are pouring new concrete( a driveway, patio, foundation or slab), you should hire a concrete contractor. You will need to have the proper sub-grade prepared, the forms and the reinforcing and the proper curing.
A handyman may perform small cosmetic repairs, such as repairing the cracks in an otherwise sound surface. If you are unsure, you can contact a concrete contractor to provide you with a free estimate on the project to give you a clear picture of what the project will entail.
Other than pricing, there are a couple of important items: ensure that the contractor has current insurance (request a certificate of insurance — not just verbal confirmation), get them to provide you with a written/itemized estimate before you sign, and ensure that they fully understand Charlotte-specific circumstances (e.g., clay soil conditions) and will be able to adhere to local permit/contractor requirements.
Any contractor that provides you with references and/or photographs of their work, specifically completed in Charlotte, are good indicators of a reliable contractor. Beware of quotes that are "too good to be true" as they typically indicate that there are limited margins available in the contractor's price.
